How it works in China

The residence permit is issued by the entry and exit administration under public safety at the place of residence. The procedure is strictly sequential: first the required visa category obtained abroad, then entry, registration at your place of residence within the first 24 hours, medical check-up at government centre, and only then the card itself.

What we need from you to get started

  • International passport and the visa category that matches your purpose
  • Sponsoring party: employer, university, or relative
  • Lease agreement or hotel address confirmation
  • Readiness to undergo the medical examination at the designated centre

Where things most often go wrong

  • —Didn’t register with the police immediately after entry — the window is very short, and without registration, further documents will not be accepted
  • —Completed a medical examination at a private clinic: only government-approved providers are accepted quarantine control center
  • —You entered on a business visa but intended to work — the category needs to change not in place, but with a new visa
  • —Changed apartments and did not re-register, and it came up at renewal

Since November 2023, China has joined the Hague Convention, so documents are now go through apostille rather than consular legalisation. Instructions in internet older than that date lead you down an unnecessary and lengthy path.

Fees, processing times, and institutional requirements change several times per year, which is why they are not listed here: we verify and quote them as of the date of submission.
