How it works in China
Rental is formalized by a contract with the owner or through an agency, and the contract mandatory: it underpins address registration. The owner must participate in registering a resident. Purchase by a foreigner is restricted and depends on the city and length of stay.
What we need from you to get started
- Timeline and budget, factoring in agency commission and deposit
- The owner’s readiness to sign the agreement and take part in the registration
- Passport and visa
Where things most often go wrong
- —Rented without a lease agreement to save money — and ended up without a registered address, and that means without extending your status
- —Paid several months upfront in cash with no documentation
- —Didn’t check whether foreigners are permitted to rent in that building
Fees, processing times, and institutional requirements change several times per year, which is why they are not listed here: we verify and quote them as of the date of submission.
