Cars & transport in Guangzhou

Transport and getting around in Guangzhou: what makes more sense — public transport or a car, and how it works with licenses and parking.

Car in Guangzhou: with a driver — yes; driving yourself — only with a Chinese licence

China does not recognise Russian or international driving licences: no rental company will hand over a car on that basis, this is the law, not a rule of any particular company. You may only drive yourself with a Chinese license or a temporary Chinese driving permit.

That is why the simplest option is a car with a driver for the hours you need, or an airport transfer: you choose online, and the price is known in advance.

How transport in Guangzhou works: metro, taxis, and the question of a car

Guangzhou is one of the few Asian megacities where the question of whether you need a car has a clear answer for most expats. The city’s transport infrastructure covers 90% of everyday journeys without a personal vehicle. But if you are an entrepreneur who regularly travels to warehouses in Foshan, Dongguan, or Zhongshan, the picture changes. Let’s walk through every option in order, with figures and real-world context for 2026.

Guangzhou Metro: the main transport for everyday city life

The Guangzhou Metro is one of the largest in the world: more than 14 lines covering all key districts from Tianhe to Panyu and Huadu. If you live in the typical expat areas — Tianhe, Haizhu, Baiyun — the metro will get you to any business hub in 20–40 minutes.

Fare depends on distance: 2–10 CNY per trip. A monthly pass or the rechargeable Yangcheng Tong transit card typically costs 80–150 CNY per month with moderate use (daily trips to business districts and markets). Cards are issued at metro ticket offices and also work on buses and select ferry routes.

Key lines for entrepreneurs:

  • Line 5 — connects Tianhe with Haizhu district and shopping quarters
  • Lines 2 and 8 — access to the Zhongda textile district and wholesale markets
  • Line 3 — Baiyun Airport and major business centers

Insider moment: during peak hours (8:00–9:00 and 18:00–19:30), central stations — especially Tianhe Cheng and Guangzhou Dong — operate with crowd control at the entrance. Allow an extra 10–15 minutes if you are heading to a meeting.

DiDi and ground transport: taxis and buses

DiDi — China’s equivalent of Uber — fully replaces ordinary taxis. The app is available on the App Store or Google Play (a VPN may be needed during installation), the interface can be switched to English, and payment is via WeChat Pay or Alipay. A standard city ride: 15–35 CNY. A ride from the city centre to Baiyun Airport: 60–120 CNY depending on traffic.

Regular yellow taxis in Guangzhou are available, with a base fare of around 10 CNY, but drivers rarely speak English and may decline card payments. Keep your destination address in Chinese on your phone — it’s an essential survival tool.

The bus network is extensive, but navigating it without knowledge of Chinese is extremely inconvenient. For newcomers, buses are more of a backup than a primary option.

Buying a car in Guangzhou: purchase, registration and everyday driving

Is a car necessary

For daily city life — almost never. For logistics — often yes. Entrepreneurs who regularly visit suppliers in Foshan or Dongguan can save several thousand CNY a month on DiDi by having their own car.

Guangzhou driving licence for Russians: how to get one

Russian driving licences are not valid in China. An international driving permit under the 1968 Convention is also not applicable. The only option is to pass the Chinese traffic rules exam and obtain a local driving licence.

Good news: since 2022, the test has been available in Russian online on the official GAFIS website. The exam consists of 100 questions, and you need to score 90 or above. After passing the online test, visit your local DMV (traffic authority, 交管局) with a package of documents:

  • international passport + visa/residence permit
  • medical certificate in the prescribed local format (issued at authorized clinics for 100–200 CNY)
  • photo, application, duty payment (approx. 50–100 CNY)

Processing time is 1–3 working days after all documents are submitted. The licence is issued for 6 years.

Buying a car in Guangzhou

The new-car market in Guangzhou is one of the most saturated in China. Local brands (BYD, AITO, Chery, GAC Aion) offer business-class EVs from 100,000 to 250,000 CNY. Japanese and Korean brands fall in the 120,000–400,000 CNY range.

Used-car market: a second-hand vehicle through the 瓜子二手车 (Guazi) platform — from 40,000 CNY for a compact sedan with 3–5 years of mileage.

A specific detail for Guangzhou is the license plate system. Petrol cars are subject to a restricted plate allocation through a lottery (foreigners with a local residence permit may participate). Electric vehicles in Guangdong province are exempt from the lottery — a plate is issued through the standard process. This is a real reason why many expats opt for an EV.

Common mistakes

  1. Counting on a Russian driving licence. Even with a notarised translation, driving in China without a local licence is illegal. Expect a fine and impoundment of the vehicle.

  2. Delaying the traffic rules test. Many expats spend months using DiDi “until they figure things out.” Meanwhile, money and mobility are being lost. The test — available in Russian — requires just one day of preparation.

  3. Buying a petrol car without accounting for the licence-plate lottery. The car is purchased, but there is no plate — and you cannot drive it. The waiting period in the lottery queue can exceed six months.

  4. Ignoring WeChat Pay when using DiDi. Without a linked Chinese payment method, hailing a ride through the app is either impossible or severely restricted.

  5. Underestimating traffic on business trips. Guangzhou is one of China’s most congested cities. A Friday-evening drive from Tianhe to Foshan can take 2–3 hours instead of 40 minutes.

  6. Not verifying the medical certificate before visiting the DMV. The certificate must come from an accredited institution — not just any private clinic. The list is published on the local transport authority’s website.

Practical takeaway

For most Russian-speaking expats in Guangzhou, the optimal setup is metro + DiDi. This covers 95% of urban needs at minimal cost. If you’re an entrepreneur making regular trips to suppliers outside the city, it’s worth getting a local driver’s license (the test is genuinely passable with 1–2 days of preparation) and considering an EV purchase: no lottery for license plates and low running costs make electric vehicles the most practical choice in Guangdong.
